We service most of Western Wyoming and can help you save a lot of money. Today’s automotive programmers have the same dealer software and the ability to do the latest automotive keys up to an including 2024 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac models.
2. Tow the car to the dealer. This is not an ideal situation. You will incur a tow bill and also additional fees plus time wasted at the dealership.
When you call the locksmith or the dealer, don’t forget to mention some important information so they will check if they have the key blank and the necessary tools to code you the new key:
1. Year, make and model of the car
2. Your exact location including street address and zip (for the locksmith to find you easily)
3. VIN number of the car located on the dashboard or door. This really important with GM keys as a lot of them look alike but our different inside.
4. Have proof of ownership – otherwise they will not make you a new replacement key.
It really depends on the type of key and model that you have.
There are 3 main types of keys for General Motors Cars and Trucks:
Non-chip keys: for older models (mostly 2000 and older).
Transponder chip keys – these types of keys must be coded on site with a special software, otherwise the car wont start. These are more expensive to make.
Key fob – push to start – these are the most expensive types of keys. Mostly made for models made after 2015. The average cost is somewhere between $180-$450. It also depends on your location, time of day, weekend, etc etc.
You can also use your VIN number to look up the cost of your particular key on the General Motors Parts websites. Remember this is just the price of the parts. You will also need to factor additional cost of the programming service and key cutting.

Another option is to purchase aftermarket keys and or remotes. This can be substatinal savings over using dealer parts. Contact your automotive locksmith directly for the best options and prices as not all aftermarket keys are the same quality. Doing this could cost you more money down the road when the key fails.
Yes most older GM vehicles do have the ability to program the remotes and keys. This is up until around 2007. After 2007 most of the vehicles require specialized programing software unless you have two keys. There is special onboard programing procedures for a lot of MG vehicle keys and that information can be found here. https://www.programyourremote.com/
Step-by-Step Chevrolet, Buick, GMC Keyless Remote Key Fob Programming (2006 and Prior Models)
With the Chevy key fob you’re programming in hand, try these simple steps:
Manually unlock your car door with te door unlock button, not the fob.
Ensure all car doors are fully shut, then insert the key into the ignition, but don’t start the car.
Press and hold the unlock button on the driver’s side door, then turn your key to the “On” position. The interior lights and radio will come on, but the engine should not be ignited.
Turn the key back to the “Off” position, then turn it to “On” and right back to “Off” once again in quick succession. (On-Off – On-Off)
Release the unlock button.
After releasing the unlock button, you should hear the door locks engage and disengage, telling you that the programming sequence can begin.
On your Chevy key fob, press and hold the “Unlock” and “Lock” buttons simultaneously until you hear the door locks engage and disengage again, indicating that you have successfully programmed your key fob.
Re-insert the newly programmed key into the ignition in the “On” position to end the programming sequence.
